Important Message Regarding Eastern Adams Regional Police

We would like to take an opportunity to address comments made in the recent media blitz about the future of Eastern Adams Regional Police Dept. Chief Robert Then portrayed the demise of the police force as solely a Berwick Twp. cause. This is simply not true. Faced with increasing costs we, as well as, Oxford Twp. and New Oxford Borough tendered letters to the Teamsters stating we would not be renewing our contract at the end of 2012. In addition to those budgetary increases were the ever increasing legal fees as a result of frivolous grievances filed by officers within the force. Those legal fees are what led to the Board of Supervisors reducing the requested $260,000 contribution this fiscal year down to $220,000. We then had to allow for an additional $40,000 in anticipated legal fees for the upcoming year. Each Municipality has their own concern as to why they submitted letters of withdrawal and why they have not signed a new Municipal contract. No one Municipality should have been singled out. Chief Then has again miss-spoken.

Knowing that the escalating costs of maintaining this local force was rapidly becoming too much for us to sustain without significantly increasing taxes, we have opted to consider alternative protection. At this time we have made no final decisions on what that might be. We want every resident to know that nearly every penny of the taxes you currently pay to Berwick Twp. is used to cover the costs of Eastern Adams Regional Police. Obviously, as suggested in the press, we are considering State Police protection which all residents already pay for in the taxes you pay to the state.

We ask that you continue to check back to our website for updates on the situation. As things develop and a final decision for coverage is reached we will post the information here.

Electronics Recycling Event - A Success!!!!!
Nov. 12 - We had a total of 26 drop offs and at the end of the 3 hour event the trailer was nearly full! Thank you to everyone who participated. A wide variety of old, unwanted appliances were dropped off including TVs, computers, printers, telephones and kitchen appliances.

These items will be boxed up by the Mission and sent to their electronics recycling partner e-Loop who will than tear the items apart, divide them by material and shred them for recycling. NONE of these items will end up in a landfill.

This was actually the Adams Co. Rescue Missions first on-location electronics recycling event. Jim Staub of the Mission was very pleased with the turnout as well. We have decided to schedule another event approx. 6 months from now in April / May of 2012. When the date has been finalized it will be posted here.

Waiting patiently for another drop off.
